The Big C Cancer Charity
During the 1970s, two resilient individuals, David Moar MBE and Clive Bamford, faced the challenging journey of battling cancer. Their struggle was not only against the disease but also the arduous travel to London and Cambridge for treatment. This experience, at times more grueling than the treatment itself, sparked a determination in David and Clive to ensure that local communities had access to high-end treatment and support close to home.
Four decades later, their vision has transcended into reality through the establishment of the charity they co-founded, The Big C Cancer Charity. Over the years, The Big C has successfully raised a staggering £40 million, with an average annual contribution of £3 million from the local community and generous supporters. What started as a modest fundraising initiative to provide chemotherapy equipment to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital has evolved into an influential organisation.
Big C now funds specialised equipment and globally impactful research projects based at the Norwich Research Park. These initiatives not only benefit the local community but also contribute to advancing our understanding and treatment of various types of cancer on a global scale.
In addition to its research endeavors, the charity has taken a holistic approach by establishing seven Big C Support and Information Centres and Hubs. These centers serve as havens, offering specialised emotional and practical support for individuals facing a cancer diagnosis and their loved ones. Importantly, these spaces provide a respite from clinical environments, creating a supportive and understanding community for those navigating the challenges of cancer.

Norfolk & Waveney Mind
Norfolk and Waveney Mind is a local mental health charity affiliated with the Mind network, dedicated to providing a comprehensive array of mental health services, training, advice, and information within the community. Their services encompass a broad spectrum, ranging from 1:1 talking therapies and innovative gardening projects to access to employment services, mental health training for businesses, schools, and individuals, as well as residential care and support programs.
The charity actively engages with the community to raise awareness and challenge stigma surrounding mental health issues, working diligently to support young people aged 14-25, adults, and carers affected by mental health challenges. As an independent charity, Norfolk and Waveney Mind raises its own funds and is governed by a Board of Trustees responsible for its operations.
Understanding the unique needs of their local community, the organisation tailors its services accordingly. While operating independently, being part of the Mind network allows them to benefit from shared support, knowledge, and ideas. Nationally, Mind provides advice and support to individuals, advocates for improved services, and works towards raising awareness about mental health issues.
Through collaborative efforts with Mind nationally and other local Minds in the network, Norfolk and Waveney Mind strives to deliver high-quality services that cater to the diverse needs of those seeking mental health support.
